What products contain asbestos?

Asbestos is commonly found in various materials that were used to build  homes between the 1930’s to the 1950’s.  It was not officially banned in Canada until around 1980 so it can still be found in homes built after 1950 but it is not as common. 

Asbestos-containing building materials can include:

Zonolite Asbestos Containing Insulation

Asbestos In Ceiling Tiles

Roofing Shingles with Asbestos

 Vermiculite insulation (Zonolite),  vinyl asbestos floor tiles, soundproofing ceiling tiles , roofing shingles and felt or siding ,Plaster (popcorn ceilings), including acoustical plaster older surface treatments, such as: paint, putty, drywall, caulking, sealants, Spackling roofing compounds like tar paper, insulation, including insulation around hot water pipes and tanks

When should I get asbestos removed from my home?

Before any renovations that could disturb an asbestos containing material. Or if there is damage to existing asbestos contain products 

Do Homes Inspectors test for asbestos?

Home inspectors don’t check for asbestos during home a inspection but they can help identify materials that contain asbestos in the house.

Do Homes Inspectors look for asbestos during inspections?

The short answer is yes a home inspector will certainly look for obvious signs of Asbestos in a home, but it's important to know that without testing its not possible to know if a product contains asbestos.
